Best bamboo sheets in Canada: a buying guide
For most people, the best bamboo sheets are 100% bamboo lyocell or bamboo viscose in a sateen weave, with an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label and pockets deep enough for your mattress. That combination gives you the cool, smooth feel people buy bamboo for. If you would rather pay less and iron never, a bamboo and cotton blend is the sensible second choice. Blends with a lot of polyester are cheaper still, but they lose much of the breathability.
What to check on the label
"Bamboo" on the front of a package tells you very little. The fibre content on the tag tells you what you are buying.
Fibre type
Almost all bamboo sheets are made by dissolving bamboo pulp and spinning it into a new fibre. In Canada the textile label has to name that fibre, so you will usually see "viscose from bamboo" or "rayon from bamboo" rather than plain "bamboo". That is normal and not a sign of a fake.
- Bamboo viscose (rayon) is the most common. It is very soft and drapey, and it is the cheaper of the two pure options.
- Bamboo lyocell is made in a closed-loop process that recovers most of the solvent, so it is usually the better pick if you care about how the fabric is made. It also tends to be a little stronger.
- Blends mix bamboo-derived fibre with cotton or polyester. A 60/40 bamboo and cotton blend feels quite different from a 70/30 bamboo and polyester one, so read the ratio.
Weave
Sateen is the silky, slightly shiny weave most people picture. Twill is a bit heavier and holds up better to rough laundering. Bamboo percale exists too and feels crisper and more matte, closer to a cotton hotel sheet.
Thread count and certification
Thread count matters less than it does with cotton because bamboo-derived fibres are already fine. A 300-thread-count bamboo sateen can feel softer than a much higher-count cotton. Look instead for OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which means the finished fabric was tested for harmful substances.
Size and pocket depth
Canadian mattress sizes match the ones sold across North America: a queen is 60 by 80 inches (about 152 by 203 cm) and a king is 76 by 80 inches (about 193 by 203 cm). Pocket depth is where people get caught out. Measure your mattress height plus any topper. If you have added something like the DreamAlign Comfort Pro Mattress Topper, a fitted sheet that just fits the bare mattress will pop off the corners.
100% bamboo vs bamboo blends
| Feature | 100% bamboo (viscose or lyocell) | Bamboo blend |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Silky, cool, drapes closely | Soft, a little crisper |
| Breathability | High | Good with cotton, weaker with polyester |
| Wrinkling | Wrinkles easily | Fewer wrinkles, especially with polyester |
| Care | Cool wash, low heat | More forgiving in the dryer |
| Pilling | Can pill if washed hot or with towels | Usually holds up well |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
Who 100% bamboo suits
- People who wake up warm or damp and want a sheet that feels cool when they get in.
- Anyone who finds cotton rough on sensitive skin.
- Sleepers who want the softest feel and do not mind a cool wash and a quick tumble on low.
Who a blend suits
A bamboo and cotton blend suits people who sleep at a neutral temperature, want to try bamboo without paying top price, or have a household that will throw the sheets in with everything else on hot. Pick cotton over polyester as the second fibre if you can. Polyester blends are the cheapest, and they are also the ones most likely to trap heat.
Bamboo sheets through a Canadian year
Bamboo earns its keep in July, when humid nights in Toronto, Montreal or Winnipeg leave cotton feeling clammy. The fabric pulls moisture away from your skin and dries quickly.
Winter is the trade-off. The same cool-to-the-touch quality can feel chilly in a bedroom kept at 18°C, so most people pair bamboo sheets with a warmer duvet rather than switching sheets. Dry furnace air also means more static, which a cool wash and dryer balls help with.
How to make bamboo sheets last
- Wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle, separately from towels and anything with zippers.
- Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres.
- Tumble dry on low, or hang them. Pull them out promptly to cut down on wrinkles.
- Expect some shrinkage with viscose if you wash hot, so buy the right pocket depth from the start.
Where Dosaze fits (and where it doesn't)
Dosaze does not sell a sheet marketed as 100% bamboo in Canada. What we sell is the Dosaze ThermaCool™ Sheet Set, which is aimed at the same reasons most people shop for bamboo: running hot and wanting something soft.
The ThermaCool fibres are naturally hypoallergenic and have submicroscopic channels that absorb moisture and then release it, and the set is described as temperature regulating, breathable and cool to the touch. It gets softer with every wash. It also resists stains, pilling and wrinkling, which covers the two complaints people most often have about pure bamboo viscose (wrinkles and pilling). The fibre is engineered to reduce bacterial growth without chemical additives.
If bamboo specifically is the point for you, for example because you want a plant-derived fibre, check the composition on the product page before buying, since the ThermaCool description does not list bamboo as the material. And if you sleep cold, a cooling sheet of any kind is probably the wrong purchase.
For a bamboo layer elsewhere on the bed, the Dosaze™ Cooling Bamboo Waterproof Mattress Protector sits under your fitted sheet and keeps spills off the mattress. Hot sleepers often pair it with the Cooling Pillow Protector, since a warm pillow can undo the effect of cool sheets.
Frequently asked questions
Are bamboo sheets good for hot sleepers?
Yes, 100% bamboo viscose or lyocell is one of the better choices for people who sleep hot. The fabric feels cool when you get in and moves moisture away from the skin. Blends with a lot of polyester are less effective, so check the fibre content before you buy.
Why does my bamboo sheet label say rayon or viscose?
Most bamboo sheets are made by turning bamboo pulp into a regenerated fibre, and Canadian textile labels have to name that fibre. That is why you see "viscose from bamboo" or "rayon from bamboo". It is the usual way bamboo sheets are made and labelled.
Are bamboo sheets warm enough for a Canadian winter?
They can feel cool at first in a cold bedroom, because the fabric is cool to the touch. Most people keep their bamboo sheets year-round and add a heavier duvet or blanket in winter. If you always sleep cold, flannel or a cotton blend may suit you better.
Is bamboo lyocell better than bamboo viscose?
Lyocell is made in a closed-loop process that recovers most of its solvent, so it is usually seen as the more responsible option, and it tends to be a little stronger. Viscose is softer and drapier for many people and usually costs less. Both feel cool and smooth, so the choice often comes down to budget and how much the manufacturing process matters to you.
Do bamboo sheets shrink?
Bamboo viscose can shrink if washed hot or dried on high heat. Wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low to keep the fit. Buying a fitted sheet with enough pocket depth for your mattress and topper also gives you some margin.
